A root canal is a procedure used to treat and save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected. During a root canal, the nerve and pulp are removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed to prevent further damage.
Unlike fillings, which cover the tooth's surface, a root canal is necessary to treat the inner portion of the tooth. Without treatment, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected, and abscesses can form. This can lead to more severe damage if left untreated.
Signs you need a root canal include pain when you chew food, swollen gums near the affected tooth, severe toothaches, and sensitivity when eating hot or cold beverages. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact Rocky View Family Dental as soon as possible for a checkup.
Pain and infection are the two most common reasons patients need a root canal procedure. Occasionally, the tooth may be decayed and require extraction, but many patients can keep their natural teeth with a root canal treatment.
If left untreated, pain or swelling in the tooth or gums can worsen and cause more widespread discomfort. Without endodontic therapy, the tissue around the tooth's root can become infected and an abscess can develop. This can cause severe pain and the infection can also spread the other areas.
Our dentist will numb the area around the affected tooth before the procedure begins. Once you are comfortable, our dentist will use a drill to create an opening in the tooth. Next, they will use small files to remove the damaged and dead parts of the tooth’s pulp. This process also removes any bacteria inside the affected tooth.
After the infection is removed, the tooth is sterilized and sealed with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. An antibiotic medicine is sometimes placed inside the tooth to help control the condition and prevent it from returning.
Depending on the severity of your case, you may need local anesthesia and sedation during the procedure. Local anesthesia is used to numb the gums around the affected area so you won’t feel pain during your treatment. If you have any issues with anxiety or fear, you can also opt for nitrous oxide sedation. Nitrous oxide is a gas administered through a small mask placed over your nose. The gas helps you relax and have a pleasant experience during your treatment.
